Alexa Ray Joel, the 23-year-old singer/songwriter daughter of Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel, was hospitalized Saturday for an overdose. According to the New York Post, she allegedly ingested a large number of sleeping pills in what police consider a suicide attempt.

According to a RadarOnline.com report, a 911 call was made from Alexa's apartment at 12:19 pm. A female caller told the dispatcher the young singer had "taken pills." Paramedics responded to the call and allegedly found her having difficulty breathing. She was taken to New York's St. Vincent's Hospital where a NYPD source told RadarOnline.com she is "conscious" and expected to recover.
Alexa is the sole child of the famous musician, 60, and his supermodel ex-wife, Christie Brinkley. Brinkley and Joel married in 1984 and divorced 10 years later. Sources say that Alexa has experienced a difficult time throughout her parents' recent personal problems. She supported her mother, Christie Brinkley, during her nasty divorce from Peter Cook, and even wrote a song about the situation called "Now It's Gone." Alexa also supported her father, Billy Joel, during his divorce earlier this year from Katie Lee Joel.

Joel, who was raised in Sag Harbor, Long Island, attended New York University for a short period of time before dropping out to focus on her music career. The singer, songwriter and pianist self-released a short album in 2006 and debuted a new song, "Invisible," this year about a failed relationship with the lyrics, "They say it doesn't matter/This love is in my mind/We never got it right, anyway."
According to an AP report, Joel described herself as "forgotten" in a MySpace blog post this summer, and said she was finding it hard to meet a nice guy:
"Just Men. UGH!!! MEN!!!!" she wrote in August. "I'm so terrible at dating -- I don't know if I'll ever get used to it! And I HATE the game-playing! Can't stand it."
Alexa Ray Joel's publicist, Claire Mercuri, stated that the singer is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.
"She was admitted, and doctors are assessing the situation," her rep told Usmagazine.com. "We have no further comment."
Her father said she will recover.
"She is going to be fine," Billy Joel told New York's Newsday newspaper on Saturday night. Usmagazine.com reports that he is currently at his home in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
Alexa was among several celebrities scheduled to appear in a tree-lighting ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday.
