Beyonce Slammed by PETA for Sexy Leather Super Bowl Costume
Beyonce's epic Super Bowl halftime show was a hit with fans and fellow celebs -- who joked that the star's fierceness caused the Superdome blackout -- but not everyone was so "Crazy in Love" with her performance. PETA, in particular, took issue with the singer's costume, a custom Ruben Singer ensemble made of leather, iguana, python, and other materials.
"We would take a bet that if Beyonce watched our video exposes...She'd probably not want to be seen again in anything made of snakes, lizards, rabbits, or other animals who died painfully," the group said in a statement about the elaborate design, which featured a removable motorcycle jacket over a black leather bodysuit with a Chantilly lace flounce skirt. "Today's fashions are trending toward humane vegan options, and Beyonce's Super Bowl outfit missed the mark on that score."
This is not the first time the superstar has clashed with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Earlier this year, Jay-Z's wife reportedly came under fire from the group for the Christian Dior mink coat she wore to President Barack Obama's inauguration (the site of her recent lip-synching controversy).
PETA's problems aside, however, Beyonce still has plenty of people in her corner -- including Real Housewives of Atlanta's Kenya Moore. And it appears the fandom is mutual: Following her halftime show on Feb. 3, the "Girls (Run the World)" singer paid tribute to the Bravo reality star by using Moore's signature catchphrase, "Gone With the Wind fabulous," to describe her post-show feelings.
Moore -- who has said that she is mistaken for Beyonce "every day" -- was floored by the mention. Talking to Bravo about the comment, she gushed: "I was absolutely speechless. I was elated to know that my favorite singer watches the show and that she's adopted my saying. It's obviously original to me and means so much to me from a personal standpoint, and to compound all of that, it felt like she was Team Kenya."
(Moore is in an ongoing feud with fellow Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Stewart. In December, she told Us Weekly that Stewart's behavior was "crass" and "disrespectful.")
"I joke about [Beyonce] being my twin, but it's just because I love her so much," Moore said in a blog post on Bravo's website. "It's all in fun, and I'm just glad that she watches the show and doesn't mind my silly comparison...It's the ultimate compliment and nod. I just live for her -- she gave me life by doing that."
