Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert Pay Tribute to Oklahoma Tornado Victims With Song
The Voice started on an emotional note on Tuesday, May 21, when Oklahoma native Blake Shelton and his wife, singer Miranda Lambert, took the stage to sing "Over You," dedicating the duet to the Oklahoma tornado victims.
As the country couple sang, Red Cross information on how to help the disaster relief effort flashed on the screen.
After the show, Shelton, 36, explained to Us Weekly why he chose "Over You" as the tribute song. The ballad was written by himself and Lambert for her 2011 album, Four the Record. It's inspired by Shelton's older brother, who was killed in a car accident when the singer was a teenager.
"Oh my gosh, I think 'Over You' was the perfect song for the this situation," he said. "It was one of those things that the moment was right and I wish things could have been different. I wish I wouldn’t of having been thinking about performing a song like that, but it just seemed like the right thing to do."
Shelton also revealed that he's planning to do more to help out -- organizing a benefit concert for the victims of the monstrous tornado that killed at least 24 people and injured more than 120 others.
"We’ll know more about it in the next 24 hours," he said. "We’re putting it together as quick as we can but I’m working with NBC and hopefully it will be something big and obviously it will be televised. It will happen really quickly."
As for musical guests that he could recruit, Shelton pointed to fellow Voice judge, Usher, and added, "Hopefully I can call in some really big favors and raise lots of money."
After the tornado hit on Monday, May 20, Lambert tweeted out her own support for the victims. "Pray," she wrote. "That's all we can do. Pray for peace for Oklahoma."
