Buenos Aires Film Festival Unveils Lineup
The Hollywood Reporter -- BUENOS AIRES – The Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival announced its full lineup Tuesday in a press conference that was held at the fest's new headquarters at the Recoleta Cultural Center. Festival director Marcelo Panozzo and Buenos Aires Ministry of Culture Hernan Lombardi presented its 15th edition at the center.
“We're very glad to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this cinephile meeting, which ensures a permanent renovation within continuity. A festival is defined by its films, and every year, BAFICI surprises, renews challenges, and allows us to discover unknown talents”, said Lombardi.
BAFICI will open with Chile's foreign Oscar bid No (Pablo Larrain) and close with Au bout de conte, by French filmmaker Agnes Jaoui, who will attend the festival. Panozzo also detailed the lineup will include retrospectives on the work of Hong Sang-Soo, Julio Bressane, Adolfo Aristarain and the Austrian avant-garde film scene. Smaller focuses will be held on Erich Langjahr, Lois Patino, and British art agency Lux.

Argentina's neighbor country, Chile will be a special guest in the lineup, with retrospectives of documentary filmmaker Ignacio Aguero and Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, and a large number of Chilean films spread throughout the slate, like Marialy Rivas' Young and Wild, Che Sandoval's Much Better than You, Alicia Scherson's The Future, and a focus on filmmaker Tiziana Panizza.
As part of the 15th anniversary celeb ration, BAFICI will include a program curated by the local branch of FIPRESCI, with 15 local films that were screened throughout the history of the festival, like Santiago Mitre's The Student, Gaston Solnicki's Papirosen, and Martin Rejtman's Silvia Prieto. Also, the fest commissioned three institutional shorts from renowned local helmer Pablo Trapero, who will also present a retrospective of his short films and his landmark opera prima Crane World.
Panozzo also announced that BAFICI's industry-arm, BAL, will be enlarged and partner with another Latin American project lab (yet to be announced). The winners of the BAL's Work in Progress slate will be screened in the Marche du Film of the Cannes Film Festival in a special event.
