Sean Penn hasn't put a ring on it -- yet.
Despite widespread speculation to the contrary, Charlize Theron and Penn are not engaged, a source confirms exclusively to Us Weekly. The "Mad Max Fury: Road" actress sparked rumors this week when she was photographed wearing a diamond ring (on that finger!) at LAX Airport on July 23.
Theron's stunning accessory is an Anita Ko Leaf Ring in 18k yellow gold -- but it didn't come from Penn, a second insider tells Us. In fact, the South African beauty, 38, treated herself to the $4,900 piece of jewelry.
Theron and Penn, 53, were first spotted getting cozy back in January during a Hawaiian vacation, and have been very vocal about their romance in recent months. They've also attended a slew of events arm-in-arm, including Theron's "A Million Ways to Die in the West" L.A. premiere, the Met Gala, and even an Oscars afterparty hosted by Penn's ex-wife Madonna.
"A friend kind of stepped into that [romantic] role, and I really didn't see it coming," Theron recently said of the relationship in Vogue. "We were just really good friends. And it's been slow going because you are aware that you could screw that up and lose it. We had to think about it. But at the end of the day, it was somewhat effortless."
The couple may not be engaged now, but a wedding is on their radar. As previously reported, the twosome have plans to wed this summer and adopt a sibling for Theron's 2-year-old son Jackson.
"Sean is revitalized with Charlize," a source told Us. "They want to get married very soon." It would be the first marriage for Theron and the third for Penn, who divorced second wife Robin Wright in 2010 after 14 years of marriage.
