Chris Evans: I've Made 20 Movies But I'm Only Proud of 3
Chris Evans has played everything from a flaming super hero to a "Harvard Hottie," but the 30-year-old actor isn't proud of every movie title on his resume.
Astounded by the success of his 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger, the Boston native tells Hong Kong's Prestige: "I'm surprised by any movie that is successful. At this point I've made a lot of films. I've made about 20 movies and I'm probably proud of three."
Before he signed on to play the patriotic Marvel super hero, "I had already made quite a few stinkers," Evans says. "I couldn't afford to make another one, let alone another one on that scale. If you make one that big and it fails, your days are numbered."
In hindsight, agreeing to take on the titular role in Captain America: The First Avenger was one of the best decisions of Evans' career. "Not only was I extremely happy with how the film turned out, but it was such a fantastic working experience," Evans says. "Everything about it has been a positive. There has not been one negative, and thank God for my team and my family and friends for pushing me [into taking the role]."
Evans turned the role down multiple times before relenting, in part because he was afraid to carry such a buzz-worthy film on his own. "When I first saw the film, I loved it. I really, really did. I saw it and texted [director Joe Johnston] and said, 'Thank you so much for giving me something to be proud of.' When you’re proud of it, you want to talk about it. It made doing the press a lot easier."
The actor will reprise his role as Captain America alongside Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers (in theaters May 4).
"They are legends. Every one of them is so talented and so experienced," Evans raves of his costars. "It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to just shut my mouth and open my eyes and try to learn a little bit."
"It's not like Twilight where there are 50 girls waiting outside my apartment and I'll never be alone again. It's not like that," Evans tells Prestige. "I still have an incredible amount of independence and privacy, which is such a blessing. It really couldn't have worked out any better."
