Gold medals are worth more than any Mirrorball trophy, anyway. On the Tuesday, March 27 installment of Dancing with the Stars -- the first elimination episode of the sixteenth season -- legendary Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill was the first celebrity to go home. Alas, the 56-year-old's exit had nothing to do with viewer votes. Instead, Hamill, citing a spinal cyst injury and urgent medical recommendations, opted out of the competition.
"I've taken the advice of my spine surgeon and I need to withdraw from the competition," explained Hamill alongside pro partner Tristan McManus during the live show. "I have an injury that could be irreparable. I wish that I could give it my all but I can't," she continued. "It's been wonderful ride."
Hamill's unfortunate departure meant that week's bottom two teams -- Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko, Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold -- were unexpectedly safe from elimination. For next week's prom-themed episode, then, all 11 remaining pairs, including celebs Andy Dick, D.L. Hughley, Wynonna Judd and Kellie Pickler, will be back to compete.
