Drew Barrymore Won't Allow Daughter Olive, 4 Months, to Wear Makeup Until She's a Teen
As a child actress, Drew Barrymore began wearing makeup for professional reasons when she was just 6 years old -- but she won't be letting her firstborn daughter Olive, 4 months, do the same! The busy new mom recently launched her Flower Beauty cosmetics line for Wal-Mart, and chatted with Us Weekly's beauty director Gwen Flamberg in NYC on Monday, Jan. 14 about how she uses the collection in her own life and why she's setting different beauty standards for Olive.
"What I wanted to do in this line was to be able to do everything in it," Barrymore, 37, tells Us. "Right now, I'm feeling like a new mom, so I really want to be natural and youthful. It's so funny. We keep going to play in the [makeup] box and I just want to feel fresh. I want to feel like I have wide eyes."
Fortunately, the Big Miracle star, who welcomed Olive with husband Will Kopelman last September, won't need too much help with looking fresh and awake anymore -- little Olive is now sleeping through the night.
Though she's only 4 months old, Barrymore has already decided when Olive will be allowed to wear makeup: her teens.
"Kids shouldn't wear makeup, I strongly feel that way," she says. "You should be a kid for as long as possible. I think when you start getting in your teens, then all bets are off, and you should just play, play, play. And figure out what kind of woman you want to be—the training wheels are off. So kids in makeup, no. Starting in your teen years, absolutely go for it, and start to discover who you are."
Not that little Olive will be forbidden from at least playing with makeup. "What little girls doesn't want to play with makeup?" Barrymore says.
"I think the only rules about makeup is not to be shy," Barrymore explains of her philosophy. "Happiness is the best makeup. That's what comes out through the pores. That's what shines through the thickest pigment. Happiness is everything."
"So that's what I would tell young girls, that's what I would tell women, and that's what I tell myself," she says. "I know that I feel the most attractive when I feel the most sane inside my body."
