Five Fans Dead After Sugarland Stage Collapse
It's every band's worst nightmare.
Five people are dead and 40 more were injured after high winds caused the stage to collapse at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Saturday. The devastation happened shortly before country band Sugarland took the stage.
One audience member said said the stage "snapped like a toothpick," Rolling Stone reports (via CNN). Concertgoers rushed to the heaps of metal to try to free those trapped. Some even created makeshift stretchers out of their seats to help move the injured to safety.
"We're all right," band members Jennifer Nettles, 36, and Kristian Bush, 41, tweeted Saturday night. "We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need your strength."
Opening act Sara Bareilles, 31, performed her set before the bad weather hit. "I'm speechless and feel so helpless," she tweeted. "Please send love and prayers to Indianapolis tonight. My heart aches for the lives lost."
According to local newspaper Indy Star, few details regarding the extent of patients' conditions have been released, but at least a handful are reportedly in critical condition or intensive care units. Three children were still being treated at Riley Hospital for Children as of Sunday morning.
