Lindsay Lohan's attempted comeback continues apace, this time with a suspiciously upbeat report about how she's landed another A-list mentor. The cautionary tale-turned-Oprah's pet project received a "surprise visit" from Ben Affleck during her 90-day, court-ordered rehab stay, report TMZ and "Access Hollywood."
The confab, despite reports to the contrary, was not arranged because Lohan was being considered for a role in Affleck's forthcoming directing project, "Live by Night" (she won't be in the crime drama). Instead, it was more of a pep talk from one rehab grad to another.
According to TMZ, Ben and LiLo rendezvoused away from the Cliffside facility in Malibu, and during the meet-up, he offered her post-treatment tips on how to stay sober among Hollywood's many temptations (imagined tip No. 1: Find someone awesome like Jennifer Garner).
Word is, Affleck also discussed the ins and outs of a successful second act, telling Lohan that she has the talent and "ability to turn things around," despite the umpteenth chances she's squandered to do just that. He added "how supportive the entertainment community is for people who make a real effort to get better and stay clean."
He presumably stopped short of going full-on Stuart Smalley by telling her, "You're good enough, you're smart enough and, doggone it, people like you."
Sources reveal that Ben's words of encouragement "really touched" Lindsay, who once talked of winning an Oscar as it were an inevitability.
For Affleck, the purported visit may have been his way of paying it forward. He entered rehab in 2001 after reportedly calling a pal and admitting he needed help. The Hollywood grapevine soon put him in touch with (and this sounds funny now) Charlie Sheen, who at the time was three years sober. Within hours, Charlie was personally chauffeuring Ben to the Promises rehab center in Malibu.
