Is mutually assured destruction the secret to an amicable divorce? That's the word from TMZ, which claims Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin will make sure their "conscious uncoupling" remains civil "because they've each done things during the marriage they don't want ending up in legal docs."
It makes sense that a couple who so carefully protected their privacy during their 10-plus year union wouldn't want those efforts undone by their split. Seems they fear a PR nightmare if any accusations (e.g., two-timing) made during the uncoupling process end up getting leaked to the media.
According to TMZ, their divorce will be "relatively quick" and conflict-free, because they have no plans to fight over their considerable assets or custody of 9-year-old Apple and 7-year-old Moses.
On Friday, they were photographed laughing side by side while dining out with friends. Gwyneth's ring finger was noticeably bare.
"You would never have guessed they had just split up," a source tells the London Sun. "They looked like they were getting on OK. Chris seemed in good form and was telling lots of jokes. Gwyneth pulled a few faces but it was all in good spirits."
They were also seen shopping together with their tykes.
"They bought some bracelets for their kids," a spy shares with E! News. "They were trying to keep a low profile. Martin was seen holding his daughter's hand and Gwyneth was seen holding the son's hand."
But the body language-reading bystander concludes that "their demeanor was not that of a happy couple. … They seemed very nonchalant, with no signs of affection being shown between them. But they are very affectionate with their children."
Meanwhile, speculation on what caused the pair's marital meltdown included photos of Paltrow giving a peck on the lips to long-ago ex-boyfriend Donovan Leitch, a theory that has been roundly denied by Leitch himself.
"I was just saying goodbye to her. It was purely innocent," he told the Mail on Sunday of the kiss, which took place last September at a Los Angeles Dodgers game. "We were sitting in the owner's box in front of 30,000 people with her two children right next to us. That isn't exactly the setting for a secret liaison. I consider her one of my closest friends. We have tons of great friends in common."
As for Gwyneth, 41, and Chris, 37, "They really tried to make it work," a source tells Us Weekly. "You could tell something was wrong, though, over the last few months. You could see a sadness in each of their eyes."
