Harvey Weinstein Jumps Gun on Touting David O. Russell's Next Project

The Associated Press, Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 8:00am (PDT)

The Hollywood Reporter -- This story first appeared in the April 5 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

No so fast. Harvey Weinstein jumped the gun when he announced during Oscar week that David O. Russell would direct The Ends of the Earth, reuniting him with his Silver Linings Playbook star Jennifer Lawrence.

In fact, Russell was not committed to the project, and others involved say he's not directing it. But after calls from THR, a source close to Russell, who remains intensely loyal to Weinstein, insists he's “still seriously considering it” but hasn't made up his mind.

Weinstein, arguably the industry's shrewdest awards maestro, announced the Russell news Feb. 19 &mdash the last day of Oscar voting. Silver Linings was up for eight awards, and more attention couldn't hurt, particularly for Lawrence, who had the best shot of winning (and did, as best actress).

The Weinstein Co. press release included a glowing quote from Russell: "She is the most dedicated person I know. She is devoted to her family, and they have been the true inspiration for her. &hellip Her acting is effortless, and she always makes it look easy.”

The Weinstein Co. wouldn't comment on the record, but insiders insist talks with Russell are ongoing.

Ends of the Earth has an enviable pedigree. Chris Terrio, who wrote Oscar winner Argo, penned the fact-based love story about an oil tycoon who loses everything after he is caught in an affair. The film is being produced by Todd Black, Steve Tisch and Jason Blumenthal of Escape Artists.

Currently, Russell is shooting his untitled Abscam project starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Silver Linings star Bradley Cooper. Lawrence has a cameo in the film, which recounts the famous FBI sting operation in the late 1970s and early 1980s that brought down a handful of Capitol Hill lawmakers.
