Jennifer Lopez stepped out on Monday night with husband Marc Anthony for Apollo Theaters Spring 2010 Benefit Concert & Awards Ceremony. The happy couple was honored with the Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis Arts and Humanitarian Award. Plus, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson were inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame.
Jennifer Lopez said, "This is Marc's old neighborhood and it's just an amazing thing. We feel like two little kids from New York who've done good."
The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin recalled being in "awe of all the people in Harlem" as an 18 year-old performer at the Apollo. Flash-forward 50 years to the present, and Aretha said it was "a thrill" to return to the iconic stage. "It brings back a lot of beautiful memories."
All the stars also commented on how the King of Pop influenced them. Jennifer asserted, "Michael is what all of us kind of aim to be." Aretha called him "the prototype for the consummate performer" and talked about a childhood snapshot of Michael and Janet Jackson she holds dear in a scrapbook.
The night's emcee, Jamie Foxx, remembered being captivated by the spectacle of Michael as a performer during his Victory Tour in the '80s. "He's really a testimony to what performing and what really giving of yourself was really about," the singer/actor said.
The one year anniversary of Michael's death is approaching on June 25, but his imprint on entertainment will undoubtedly live on through tributes and on the airwaves.
