Ouch! Jenny McCarthy was hoping for positive feedback, but instead received some harsh criticism via Twitter on Thursday, March 13. When the "View" co-host asked her followers what he or she "look for in a mate," many took the opportunity to reply that they would want someone who isn't anti-vaccination -- like her.
"What is the most important personality trait you look for in a mate? Reply using #JennyAsks," McCarthy, 41, asked. Some of the responses weren't that friendly -- but admittedly funny, too.
"Somebody who gets that refusing vaccines because of 'toxins' and then shilling for e-cigs makes you a pathetic hypocrite #JennyAsks," one person wrote back. "Someone who think vaccines are safe," another added.
"#JennyAsks Someone who doesn't spread false info causing disease," another chimed in. "Someone who believes in data & science, not discredited, fake medical 'experts' or anecdotal evidence," a fourth said. Some even acknowledged and joked about the "hijacking" of McCarthy's #JennyAsks hashtag. (The TV personality has yet to reply to the backlash.)
McCarthy has argued for years that early childhood vaccines against diseases like polio and the measles are linked to autism in children. Her 11-year-old son Evan has autism, and she's spoken out about about the issue via social media, her ABC daytime talk show, and even during an appearance on "Larry King Live" in April 2008.
"We need to get rid of the toxins, the mercury -- which I am so tired of everyone saying it's been removed," she told King. "It has not been removed from the shots." (Kristin Cavallari also recently revealed that she believes there's a link between vaccines and autism. The "Hills" alum -- who's pregnant with her second child -- told the Fox Business show "The Independents" on March 13 that she and husband Jay Cutler have not vaccinated their son Camden, 18 months.)
McCarthy also came under fire back in January when rumors surfaced that her son, whom she had with ex-husband John Asher, doesn't actually have autism. At the time, she debunked the "blatantly inaccurate and completely ridiculous" allegations on her Twitter account.
