Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna and More: Highlights of the 2011 Grammys Telecast
The stage was overflowing with stars on Sunday night as everyone from Justin Bieber to Mick Jagger to Lady Gaga to Katy Perry to Barbra Streisand wowed the crowd with live performances. Read on for highlights from the show.
The show opened with a tribute to Aretha Franklin with Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams and Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch taking the stage to perform a medley of the Queen of Soul's hits.
Lady Gaga hatched out of an egg to perform her brand-new single, "Born this Way," donning prosthetic points on her shoulders and horns on her head. The eccentric singer was clad in a yellow top and skirt combo that appeared to be made out of yellow plastic sheeting, surrounded by similarly yellow-plastic-gowned dancers.
Justin Bieber perched on a stool with an acoustic guitar, launching into his hit "Baby," after a pep talk from his mentor Usher, before drummers took the stage and Bieber joined fire dancers to perform "Never Say Never," joined by Jaden Smith rapping. The performance wrapped up with Bieber joining Usher in a performance, and was met with a standing ovation by the crowd.
Katy Perry shared home movie footage of her recent wedding to Russell Brand as she was hoisted into the air on a swing with the footage playing on a fabric drape behind her as she sang "Not Like the Movies." Later, she was surrounded by Valentine heart-candy dressed dancers and giant light-up hearts as she performed her hit "Teenage Dream."
Perhaps the most colorful point in the night came when Cee Lo Green took the stage surrounded by Muppets dressed as a technicolor bird in armor. The singer performed "Forget You," accompanied by Gwyneth Paltrow, who was clad in colorful heels, a black bodysuit and pink feather earrings.
Other noteworthy performances included Mick Jagger appearing solo for the first time on the Grammy stage, singing "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," accompanied by Raphael Saadiq, in tribute to Solomon Burke; Rihanna, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Skylar Grey teaming up for a spirited performance of their "Love the Way You Lie"; Rihanna later taking the stage with Drake for a steamy rendition of "What's My Name," dancing around an actual roaring bonfire; Bob Dylan joined onstage by the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons; the Musicares Person of the Year Barbra Streisand, who performed "Evergreen" accompanied by an orchestra with a backdrop of falling leaves behind her.
Aretha Franklin, dressed in a white gown, looking as if she'd shed a few pounds, appeared in a taped message and thanked everyone for their well-wishes during her recent illness, and added, "I wish that I could have been there with all of you tonight, but since I can't, next year, okay?"
Muse's Matt Bellamy acknowledged his lady love Kate Hudson's pregnancy, saying, "Special thanks to my beautiful pregnant girlfriend over there," while accepting Best Rock Album with his band Muse.
Lady Gaga, when accepting her award for Best Pop Vocal Album, proclaimed, "I need to say thank you tonight to Whitney Houston. I wanted to thank Whitney, because when I wrote 'Born this Way' I imagined her singing it because I wasn't secure enough in myself to imagine myself a superstar."
