The "Roar" hitmaker managed to edge out Bieber's 46.49 million on Monday to claim the title, which he had held since January, when he toppled Lady Gaga with his then-33.3 million-strong collective.

Gaga now sits at three on the micro-blogging popularity list with 40.39 million followers, while Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake also feature in the new Twitter top 10.
