Lady Gaga to Debut New Single at MTV Video Music Awards in First Post-Surgery Performance
Gaga's still got it! Lady Gaga will make her return to the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25, the network announced on Thursday, July 25. And, in true Gaga fashion, the singer is planning to make her first post-surgery performance a memorable one, by debuting her new single, "Applause."
Gaga, 27, has been keeping a relatively low profile since undergoing hip surgery in late February. The over-the-top pop singer has, however, been spotted out and about in her trademark platform boots, a sure sign that she is well on her way to recovery.
On Wednesday, July 24, the "Born This Way" singer shared a photo of herself with dark tresses and completely makeup-free on her official fan site, Little Monsters, along with a little glimpse into her current creative process.
"As they pry the single from my bleeding fingers. It's a scary thing to revisit those things underneath, the pain in your past," she wrote alongside the photo. "But all I found was raw passion. I thought I was destroyed inside. I'm ready to fight. Start the music."
Gaga has been known to make bold statements at the VMAs in the past, perhaps most memorably in 2010, when she walked the stage to accept her award for Video of the Year in a dress made entirely of meat.
"I never thought I'd be asking Cher to hold my meat purse," the then-24-year-old said with a smile as she picked up her Moonman.
One year later, the songstress dressed up as her alter ego, Jo Calderone, to accept the award for Best Female Video for her hit "Born This Way."
"I'm so happy to accept the award tonight because Gaga's not here for Best Female Video," she said in her speech. "And I know if she would want me to thank her Little Monsters. You know, earlier tonight, they told me I got Best Video With a Message. But you know what? There's so many great artists in this room, sitting over there in that front row and some performed tonight."
"Every video they've got has a f---ing message," she continued. "I feel so blessed to be here, and it's true. It doesn't matter who you are. Gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgender -- you were born this way. God bless you, MTV. Yeah!"
