Michael Jackson on a Gurney: Death Trial Details
Opening statements began this morning in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the man accused of killing Michael Jackson, with the prosecution showing jurors a photo of Jackson on a gurney -- with the word "homicide" stamped over it -- saying that the late King of Pop's death stemmed from misplaced trust in his doctor.
Murray is accused of involuntary manslaughter, with the prosecution saying that he gave Jackson a lethal dose of the powerful sedative propofol. Murray's defense says that Jackson administered an extra dose of the drug himself, with the doctor's attorney saying, "He did an act without his doctor's knowledge, against his permission, against his orders. He did an act that caused his own death."
Several Jackson family members were present for the first day in the courthouse, including patriarch and matriarch Joseph and Katherine, sisters LaToya and Janet, and brothers Jermaine, Randy and Tito.
One of the more startling pieces of evidence played for the jury included a recording that Deputy District Attorney David Walgren played: A never-before-heard recording from Murray's cell phone of Jackson the month before he died -- slurring his words and talking about his upcoming concerts.
Walgren said, "What happened during that time frame is that the acts and omissions of Michael Jackson's personal doctor Conrad Murray [which] directly led to his premature death at age 50."
