Piers Morgan premiered his new CNN talk show "Piers Morgan Tonight" on Monday with the biggest name in television - Oprah Winfrey - getting the media magnate to talk about a time when she considered ending her life.
Oprah has confessed to having a promiscuous past and she became pregnant at 14 as a result.
Following her pregnancy, Oprah went to live with her father in Nashville at her mother's insistence. While explaining the ground rules for staying in his house, Oprah's father told her, "I would rather see a daughter of mine floating down the Cumberland River than to bring shame on this family and the indecency of an illegitimate child."
Oprah's father made this statement unaware that his daughter was already pregnant and his words led Oprah to think, "Well, I'm just going to have to kill myself." This encouraged her to perform self-destructive "cries for help" such as drinking detergent, but the talk show host didn't wound herself fatally.
Oprah said that she knew she had been given a second chance when the baby died before it could be brought home from the hospital.
