Penelope Cruz Bursts Into Tears Talking About Newborn Son

USMagazine, Monday, May 16, 2011, 8:51am (PDT)

It's not easy to make Penelope Cruz cry -- but that's exactly what one interviewer did when Vogue asked the new mom how motherhood has changed her.

"One second," she says, her eyes welling up with tears. "This has never happened to me. This is really funny. I'm sorry. It's unexpected."

Though Cruz, 37, has yet to talk about son Leo publicly, it's clear he's had a profound impact on the Oscar winner. "From the first second, you feel so much love," she tells the magazine's June issue. "It is a revolutionary experience. That's the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment, when you see that face, you are transformed forever."

Cruz -- who gave birth on January 22 -- eventually breaks down into full-on hysterics while gushing about her adorable baby boy. "Even if you have heard from all your friends and family, 'This is what's going to happen,' until it happens to you, it's hard to understand in your soul."

Cruz's good pal Salma Hayek, 44, says the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides actress is a natural when it comes to raising a child. "Penelope is a motherly creature, a warrior by nature," Hayek tells Vogue. "I told her that little boy is the luckiest boy in the world."

Despite their superstar status, Cruz points out that she and husband Javier Bardem, 42, have made a conscious effort to give baby Leo a normal life.

"I want my son -- and my kids if I have more -- to grow up in a way that is as anonymous as possible," Cruz says. "The fact that his father and I have chosen to do the work that we do doesn't give anybody the right to invade our privacy."
