Private Practice Ending After 6 Seasons, Creator Shonda Rhimes Announces
Private Practice's current season will be its last, series creator Shonda Rimes announced via WhoSay October 19. It will consist of 13 episodes.
"There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line," Rhimes wrote of the ABC medical drama. "Creatively, we are all extremely proud of the show and especially proud of this season -- which you will all soon discover is a creative renaissance. I can't wait for you to see it."
Rhimes added, "It's heartbreaking to end. Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there's a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons. It's rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we're grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It's meant the world."
Series star Tim Daly, 56, left the series in May, and leading lady Kate Walsh, 45, confirmed the sixth season would be her last in June. "It's been an incredible journey and amazing ride," Walsh said at the time. "I'm hugely, hugely grateful."
Private Practice premiered in September 2007 as a spin-off of the hit ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. The series followed Walsh's character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, as she left Seattle Grace Hospital and began practicing medicine in L.A.
The show also stars Taye Diggs, 41, Amy Brenneman, 48, Benjamin Bratt, 48, KaDee Strickland, 36, Paul Adelstein, 43, Caterina Scorsone, 31, and Brian Benben, 56.
