Russell Brand on Swatting: 'If I Were a Teenager, I'd Definitely Do It'

The Associated Press, Wednesday, April 10, 2013, 1:16pm (PDT)

The Hollywood Reporter -- British actor Russell Brand has become the latest celebrity to fall victim to “swatting,” an illegal practice that has become increasingly popular in recent months. The term “swatting” refers to the practice of calling 911 to falsely claim that violence or illegal activity is occurring in a celebrity's home, often citing shootings or armed robberies. Police officers respond to the matters as if they are real, causing a roundup of police cars and helicopters to rush to the scene, where they sometimes will stumble upon a terribly confused star.

Brand called in to On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday morning to address a recent swatting attack on his home, noting that the incident was less than a blip on his radar.

“If all swatting attacks are this unnoticeable, I'm ready for war,” Brand joked. “I didn't even know it had happened. I still don't know what a swatting attack is!”

Brand explained that at the time of the incident, he was away from his home.

“There's always some helicopters and police at my house anyway because of my involvement in other activities, so I didn't notice any additional ones,” he added.

In true Brand fashion, he kept the conversation lighthearted while admitting, “I think if I were a teenager, I'd definitely do it.”
