Insane! Former Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland is NOT in jail, despite a police report detailing his arrest and incarceration -- turns out the man behind bars is an impersonator!
The crime in question occurred on Saturday, July 26 at a Rite Aid in the Beverly Hills section of Los Angeles. Police were called for a shoplifting offense and arrested a man (for stealing razors, according to TMZ, and having methamphetamine on his person).
The man arrested declared himself to be Weiland, and furnished police with all Weiland's details including his date of birth. Police records indicated the “Plush” rocker was in jail and being held on $95,000 bond.
On Thursday, August 21, as news reports started breaking that Weiland was behind bars, the real Scott Weiland shared a video of himself, clearly not in jail, via Facebook.
"I just got done reading something very interesting," a stony-faced Weiland said. "A nice piece of fiction saying I was in jail and have been for months. I've actually been touring, writing and recording, this is the studio we're in right now. So all I have to say to our fans is don't worry, don't fret, it's a lie."
Within hours the Beverly Hills Police Department released a statement explaining the extraordinary mix up.
"On Saturday, July 26, 2014, at approximately 9:34 a.m., the Beverly Hills Police Department received a call of a shoplift that had just occurred at the Rite Aid in the 400 Block of N. Bedford Drive. Police units ultimately arrested a suspect for that crime. Upon arrest, the suspect identified himself as former Stone Temple Pilots band member Scott Weiland," the statement read.
"On Thursday, August 21, 2014, Beverly Hills Police discovered through an FBI Fingerprint Return that the subject arrested was not Scott Weiland. The fingerprint return positively identified the individual as Jason Michael Hurley (44 years of age)."
Beverly Hills Police will be requesting an additional criminal filing on Hurley for furnishing police officers with false information.
