PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- The Haitian government says the aid group founded by Hollywood star Sean Penn will be in charge of demolishing the National Palace destroyed in the 2010 earthquake.
Penn's organization J/P HRO is expected to begin demolishing the white Beaux Arts mansion in downtown Port-au-Prince in the next 10 days. It's a pro-bono job and should take a couple of months.
The earthquake flattened hundreds of buildings in Port-au-Prince and other cities in the south. The National Palace was among them and it came to symbolize the massive scale of devastation caused by the disaster.
The government is still trying to figure out what structure will replace the National Palace.
Government spokesman Lucien Jura disclosed details to The Associated Press on Tuesday evening.
