Shia LaBeouf Sits Front-Row at Orphans Broadway Play Weeks After Quitting Amid Alec Baldwin Feud
No bad blood, then? Shia LaBeouf made a surprise appearance at a preview performance of Broadway play Orphans on Tuesday, March 26, and he made sure his former costars got a good glimpse of him in the audience, taking a seat in the first row.
According to the New York Times, the 26-year-old actor, who was previously cast as one of the leads of the play, "shot out of his seat and applauded enthusiastically" after the performance came to an end, even clasping hands briefly with his replacement, actor Ben Foster.
Just last month, things weren't so cordial between LaBeouf and the cast, however. The Transformers star abruptly left the play after getting into a very public feud with director Daniel Sullivan and costar Alec Baldwin.
"The theater belongs not to the great but to the brash," LaBeouf tweeted in a thinly veiled snipe at Baldwin, 54. "Acting is not for gentlemen or bureaucratic-academics. What they do is antiart."
The young actor also released a series of private email exchanges. Baldwin responded diplomatically to LaBeouf's taunts, though he was noticeably miffed over the film actor's abrupt exit.
"I can tell you that, in all honesty, I don't think he's in a good position to be giving interpretations of what the theater is and what the theater isn't," he told New York magazine's Vulture blog earlier this month.
On Tuesday, Baldwin "noticed Mr. LaBeouf and fixed on him for a beat; it was unclear if he was surprised to see him there," the Times reports. A spokeswoman for the play explained that LaBeouf had not formally alerted the production team that he would be attending.
Shortly after he was called out for his online actions late last month, LaBeouf had issued an email apology -- which turned out to be excerpted from a 2009 Esquire essay, "How to Be a Man," by fiction editor Tom Chiarella.
