Super sincere! Stephen Colbert broke out of his Comedy Central character in a guest appearance for Rookie magazine's "Ask a Grown Man" video series. In the 10-minute clip, the comedian, 50, went for a more serious and genuine route when giving advice to teenage girls about boyfriends, sex, and relationships in general.
The first question was posed by a girl named Loretta, 14, who noted that guy friends of hers were catcalling and making crude jokes. "Do they know it hurts when they do stuff like that?" she asked. Colbert, clearing his throat, responded: "I think the reason why boys do this kind of stuff is because they want your attention."
His advice was, "If you don't know the person who's doing it, I would ignore it. If you know the person… they really care what you think. I would say, 'Please don't do that because I really don't like it.'" Colbert added: "For these sort of things to stop, boys have to be educated."
The next question came from a girl who was peeved that her father wouldn't let her sleep over at her boyfriend's house. Colbert, a father of three himself, noted: "You say there's no real reason he won't let you sleep at your boyfriend's house. Well, he might have his own reasons." He concluded his spiel by telling the 19-year-old, "Approval of a boyfriend is not the same thing as sort of giving you the carte blanche of approving of a sexual relationship. They can be nice, they can approve of him, but it's not the same thing."
Another teen from Mexico City wrote about how to find clues as to when someone likes or loves a person.
"People show they like you in all different kinds of ways," responded Colbert. "They want to hear your stories. They reach out to you. Everybody wants to be loved. Everybody wants you to pay attention to them." He expressed, rather adorably, "One definition of love is 'another person's happiness is more important than your own.'"
The funny celeb, who married his wife Evelyn in 1993, concluded in the video: "There are so many different ways affection is expressed."
