'Top Gun' actress Kelly McGillis joined in a civil union with her longtime partner Melanie Leis on Wednesday, the New York Times confirms.

McGillis, 53, is best known for her role as Charlie Blackwood -- the love interest to Lieutenant Maverick (Tom Cruise) -- in the 1986 film 'Top Gun.' Leis, 42, is a sales executive in Philadelphia.

The two women joined a civil union in Collingswood, New Jersey. Last year, McGillis revealed to SheWired.com that she was a lesbian. In a video posted on the website, when asked if she is looking to date a man or woman, the twice-divorced actress replied, "Definitely a woman. I'm done with the man thing."

According to the Times, McGillis and Leis met in Key West, Florida when Leis was bartending at a restaurant that the actress owned with her second husband, Fred Tillman. McGillis has two daughters with Tillman, Kelsey Laure, 20, and Sonora Ashley, 17.
