Will Smith on the Kardashians: Star Suggests that Both Families Regard Fame Differently
Although Will Smith's 14-year-old son, Jaden, is dating Keeping Up With the Kardashians' star Kylie Jenner, that doesn't necessarily mean both families have similar feelings about fame. In a new interview with New York Magazine, the 44-year-old After Earth actor opened up about life in the limelight, trying to deflect any comparisons between his fam and the Kardashian clan.
It started when the reporter asked Will and Jaden if they see themselves differently from the Kardashians, who as the reporter puts, it: "Treats their fame as the family business." Will laughs and doesn't let Jaden answer, explaining, "You know, he’s never had to, to deal with those kinds of questions."
As the reporter tries to ask a different question, Will mimics the interviewer, saying, "'So how do you think your life is similar or un-similar to people’s names in Calabasas?'" (The Kardashian brood's home base is in Calabasas, Calif.)
The actor then sets out to answer -- trying to deny any similarities between his family and the Kardashians.
"For our family, the entire structure of our life, our home, our business relationships -- the entire purpose is for everyone to be able to create in a way that makes them happy," he explained. "Fame is almost an inconsequential by-product of what we’re really trying to accomplish. We are trying to put great things into the world, we’re trying to have fun, and we’re trying to become the greatest versions of ourselves in the process of doing things we love."
"The idea of fame or exploitation or orchestrating the media is sometimes even less than desirable for us," he added.
Will, who stars alongside Jaden in the May 31 action flick, insists that fame was not something that he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, chose for their kids: Jaden and singer-actress Willow, 12.
"It may seem like we have pushed our kids into the business, but that is absolutely insane," he said. "I would never, ever, push somebody to have their face on a poster that going to be everywhere in the world … at the end of the day, it has to be their choice."
