Everyone knew that Angelina Jolie was brave, but we didn't know it would manifest like this. During the spring, the actress had a preventive double mastectomy. Angie has a mutation of the BRCA1 gene that greatly increases her risk of developing cancer. Surgery decreased that chance. Angelina even broke the story in a surprising way: Less than a month after her final surgery, she wrote a New York Times op-ed about the experience. "For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options," she wrote. "I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices."
