ETonline, Sunday, March 18, 2012, 6:39pm (PDT)
  • George Clooney was arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., on March 16 and he later hit the Sunday news circuit, speaking out about the situation in Sudan and explaining why he's willing to be arrested to help the people there.

"I'm embarrassed to say this, but we would not be doing this segment, frankly, on Sudan if you weren't apart of it," Chris Wallace admitted to Clooney on "Fox News Sunday." "Is that the point?"

Clooney confirmed the notion that he is using his celebrity to bring attention to a suffering part of the world that would normally be ignored, by telling of how his father, a journalist, used to have his human interest stories "bumped" by segments about Hollywood celebrities. Affected by seeing this at a young age, Clooney came up with an idea in 2006.

"I [asked my dad], 'Remember how you used to get all your stories bumped by, like, Liz Taylor or something happening in Hollywood?'" said Clooney, who went on to make his father an offer he couldn't refuse. "I said, 'Well, let's go to Darfur and you be the newsman and I'll be Liz Taylor and let's get it on the air."

Clooney's protest movement accuses the country's president, Omar al-Bashir, of provoking a humanitarian crisis and blocking food and aid from entering the volatile Nuba Mountains region near the county's border with South Sudan.
