Way back when, Johnny Depp liked nothing more than proposing to his girlfriends. In between hotel trashings, he slipped a ring onto the finger of Kate Moss. He also asked for the hand of Winona Ryder (alas, neither the engagement nor his ill-fated "Winona Forever" arm tattoo lasted). There were also rumored question-poppings to Jennifer Grey and Sherilyn Fenn.
Now comes talk that Depp, 50, who split from Vanessa Paradis in 2012 after fourteen unmarried years and two children together, may have asked for the hand of 27-year-old girlfriend Amber Heard.
On Monday night, the actress made a conspicuous show of keeping her left hand covered (left) as she dined at Ago restaurant in Los Angeles with a female friend. According to E! News, she went so far as to have the valet open her car door, supposedly so she wouldn't have to flash her digit.
But paparazzi did manage to get a shot, albeit a blurry one, of a large sparkler decorating her all-important finger.
Their reps have yet to comment on the engagement whispers.
Depp and Heard met on the set of the 2011 film "Rum Diary" and were first linked in early 2012, right around the time rift rumblings hit his long-term relationship with Paradis.
Johnny and Amber have kept the romance low-key, although they made a point of posing for photographers last Saturday at the Art of Elysium gala in Los Angeles.
Depp has made it down the aisle just once before, tying the knot with Lori Foster in 1983. The marriage fizzled after two years.
"I never found myself needing that piece of paper," he said in 2010. "Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don't need somebody to say, 'Okay, you're married.'" Besides, he added, "I'd be so scared of ruining [Vanessa's] last name. She's got such a good last name."
Prior to hooking up with Depp, Heard enjoyed a four-year relationship with girlfriend Tasya van Ree.
