Many blamed Katie's slow spiral from fresh-faced up-and-comer to glassy-eyed, disheveled automaton on her induction into Tom's Scientology-encased lifestyle, and several outlets are citing the church as the reason she's bailing out.
According to TMZ, the actress asked for sole custody of Suri instead of the usual joint option because "she doesn't want Tom to drag their daughter" into the controversial religion (after his divorce from Nicole Kidman, their kids, Bella, 19, and Connor, 17, were raised in the church and are rarely seen with their mom).
"Katie's primary concern remains, as it has always been, her daughter's best interest," read her split statement.
She's also retained two legal pit bulls (one in New York; one in New Jersey) who specialize in complex, high-profile divorce cases.
"Katie did not want Tom making all the decisions in Suri's life, and that's what was going on," an insider asserts to Radar Online. "She decided it was high time she started deciding on what was best for her daughter, or at least having an equal say, and she knew that would be impossible if she remained Mrs. Tom Cruise."
The New York Daily News points out that Suri is approaching an age when Scientology-raised kids become more involved in the L. Ron Hubbard-founded faith, including beginning E-meter-inclusive auditing sessions (sort of like counseling, but more intense).
