Alec and Kim's battle over their daughter, Ireland, began in 2000. At the time, Kim was awarded primary custody, with Alec granted visitation rights. In 2004, Alec won joint legal and physical custody of Ireland and would fly back and forth between his home in New York to Kim's in L.A. to see his daughter. But Alec accused Kim of keeping his daughter from him, causing parental alienation. The ugly battle between the couple came to a head in April 2007 when, after Ireland missed a scheduled phone call with her dad, Alec left her a scathing voice mail, calling her a "rude, thoughtless little pig." The message was leaked to TMZ, which put it online. Alec was then barred from seeing Ireland completely. In 2008, Alec published "A Promise to Ourselves: A Journey Through Fatherhood and Divorce," which chronicles his side of the $3 million custody battle. Alec has since regained custody rights, and he and Ireland have mended their relationship.
