Sandra Bullock Donates a Million Dollars Toward Haitian Relief

ETonline, Saturday, January 16, 2010, 10:38am (PST)

Sandra Bullock says she's donated $1 million to a medical humanitarian organization that's been providing vital assistance to earthquake victims in Haiti.

Bullock donated the generous sum to Doctors Without Borders' emergency operations in Port-Au-Prince, says the Associated Press.

"I wanted to ensure that my donation would be used immediately to meet the needs of the Haitian people affected by this catastrophic event," Bullock said.

Meanwhile, from Rosie O'Donnell to Alfre Woodard to Gerard Butler, stars are coming together with ET to raise funds for Haitian earthquake survivors.

How you can help: Financial donations can be made at www.redcross.org, 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or mail your donation to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to your local American Red Cross chapter. The public can also help by texting "Haiti" to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is also helping to reconnect separated families within the country. They have established a special Web site, enabling persons in Haiti and abroad to search for and register the names of relatives missing since the earthquake: www.icrc.org/familylinks.

Hollywood is rallying to help Haiti in its time of need. With 100,000 feared dead, numerous celebrities have pledged support for the earthquake-ravaged country. The Red Cross has also opened its warehouse in Panama to provide tarps, mosquito nets and cooking sets for thousands of families. They say that clothes are not helpful right now because there is nowhere to store them, no one to sort them, and it would be difficult to transport the items to Haiti.

On partnering with ET, Julie Whitmer, Director of Celebrity and Entertainment Outreach for the American Red Cross National Headquarters says, "Entertainment Tonight has been a tremendous partner in mobilizing the entertainment community following major domestic and international disasters. Those with a public voice have the power to use it to help others, and we are deeply appreciative of their generosity."
