Tom Petty, MTV Video Music Awards, Staples Center, The Heartbreakers, fire
Arsonists were responsible for the May 17, 1987, fire that completely destroyed the rocker's Encino, Calif., home. The blaze occurred while Tom and his then-wife were at home with one of their two daughters and a housekeeper, whose hair caught fire during the blaze. Tom, who now avoids singing about fire, opened up about the incident in his memoir, "Conversations With Tom Petty." "We were shaken for years by it," he says. "It's sort of like being raped, I would imagine. It really took a long time. And it was 10 times as bad, because you knew that somebody just went and did it. Somebody tried to off you." The Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers frontman and his family lost everything save a few guitars during the conflagration. The fire was started when someone threw a can of lighter fluid against a wall of the home.
