Blake Shelton engages in Twitter war with Westboro Baptist Church
Apparently, a performer need not be gay or even that liberal to become a target of the Westboro Baptist Church. The hate group recently distributed a press release about plans to picket a Blake Shelton concert because Shelton divorced his first wife and married Miranda Lambert. "There's not a thimble's worth of integrity in these sissy-men who fill up the airwaves with their self-indulgent ways," a spokesperson wrote in the statement. "THAT is why f--- think it's OK to marry," the press release continued, finding a way to work in some homophobia as well.
The WBC also lashed out at Shelton on Twitter, sending him messages about the planned protest and sharing literature on which the group had written, "Blake made Miranda a whore," since the WBC does not recognize divorce (understatement of the year.)
Shelton was quick to reply once engaged, egging the group on with messages like, "I got one more sin for ya," followed by an unprintable expletive, and sharing a photo of a WBC protester, with the tweet, "ya know what else God hates? Inbreeding."
Eventually, the WBC responded: "A great response to Bible Words, BS! #not #StillPicketingYou." Shelton shared the tweet on his own page, following up with, "Please!! I beg you!! Not a picket!! Have mercy on me!!"
After a few more missives, Shelton apparently found more important things to do than engage the hate group. His radio silence inspired this from the WBC: "Blake Shelton Tweets have gone silent; his Mommie called him home for supper. #GodH8sAdultery." We left off a few of the more offensive hash tags ...
