Skirt 'n' Ernie: When Tom Cruise began his rabid wooing of Katie Holmes in 2005, he supposedly surprised her by filling a hotel suite with dozens of designer outfits. At first, we thought, "Wow, what a generous guy." That was soon followed by, "Wow, what a presumptuous guy, not even letting her pick out her own clothes." But five years and dozens of fashion flameouts later, we realize Cruise was probably onto something with his apparent attempts at style control. Left to her own devices, Katie almost always gets it wrong. Case in point: the New York premiere of "The Extra Man." With unlimited resources at her disposal, the oddly dreadlock-experimenting actress (and, lest we forget, fashion designer) chooses horizontal red-and-blue stripes and buckle-topped shoes. If she was trying to look as if Ernie from "Sesame Street" fell into Baby Gap (after ignoring Bert's sound advice about the superiority of vertical lines) and landed on Plymouth Rock, then kudos. If not, it's long past time that Tom booked another suite.
