John Hughes, Aug. 6, age 59: If there had been no John Hughes, could there have been a 1980s? Well, sure, but it wouldn't have been the same without Hughes' insightful huge hit "Home Alone" and its sequels, or his wildly popular teen angst films, which included "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles" and which launched the Brat Pack. Of his propensity to focus on films about and starring teens and children, he once said, "I don't think of kids as a lower form of the human species." Hughes died suddenly of a heart attack in New York.
