Dennis Hopper, May 29, age 74: Dennis Hopper was one of the fresh "young Turks" in 1950s Hollywood, appearing alongside his good friend James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant." Hopper would go on to have one of the most varied careers among his contemporaries, in films like "Easy Rider" (which he co-wrote and directed), "Hoosiers," "Apocalypse Now," "Blue Velvet" and "Speed." He was almost as well known for his amazing collection of contemporary art as he was for being a film iconoclast. In 1997 he said, "Like all artists, I want to cheat death a little and contribute something to the next generation." Mission accomplished.
