Carly Rae Jepsen
While attending a performing arts college, Carly Rae Jepsen starred in a string of school musicals, got her first guitar and started gigging regularly in Vancouver pubs and cafés. In 2007, she attempted to break into the biz as a contestant on “Canadian Idol” and ended up placing third on season 5 of the competition. The self-proclaimed “flower child of pop” released her first CD a year later and it contained two singles, “Bucket” and “Tug of War”, which garnered radio attention in her homeland. Her follow-up EP, Curiosity, came out in 2012 and contains her now worldwide hit “Call Me Maybe.” Her countryman Justin Bieber heard it on the radio while vacationing for the holidays up North with then-girlfriend Selena Gomez and both of them tweeted about their new find. Eventually his manager Scooter Braun signed her to their label School Boy Records in America and she released Kiss in the US. Thanks to a catchy chorus and numerous celebrity cover videos (including one by Cookie Monster and another by Katy Perry), “Call Me Maybe” was No. 1 on both the U.S. and Canadian Billboard charts and Jepsen was nominated for 3 Juno Awards and two Grammys. She appeared on the fifth season premiere of “90210, did a duet with Owl City called “Good Time” and is now at work on a third album. She has been dating musician Matthew Koma since 2012.
