She suffered a minor stroke at 18, but picked herself back up and scored a publishing deal with Sony. She penned songs for Chris Brown and “Party In The USA” for Miley Cyrus before signing her solo deal with Universal and releasing her debut CD, Who You Are, in 2010. She won the Critics Choice Award at the 2011 Brits, judged a U.K. edition of “The Voice,” played the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012 and became the first U.K. female artist to earn six Top 10 singles from a single album. Her second album, Alive, was released in 2013 and included singles “Wild,” “Price Tag” and “It’s My Party.” Her 2014 release, Sweet Talker, featured collaborations with Ariana Grande, De La Soul and Nicki Minaj and the lead singles “Bang, Bang” and “Burnin’ Up “ J, who previously identified as a bisexual before renouncing it in 2014 as a “phase,” calls her fans Heartbeats and once suffered from a panic attack when forced to perform in the dark.
