While working as a coat-checker after high school, Mariah Carey and her five-octave range met Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1988 who signed her to Columbia Records and oversaw the making of her 1990 self-titled debut. It had four No. 1 singles and nabbed her 2 Grammys including Best New Artist in 1991 and was followed up by her platinum Unplugged album in 1992. Mottola saw her as more than a cash cow and their 1993 wedding was a “Vision Of Love” with a $500,000 price tag. Carey would go on to sell more than 200 million records, release the best-selling holiday album of all time, record for three record labels, top charts with singles like “Fantasy,” “Dream Lover,” Honey,” “Heartbreaker,” “We Belong Together,” and “Butterfly,” receive Billboard’s Artist of The Decade Award, three more Grammys in 2006 as well as many other accolades, perform at the Super Bowl and a Divas Live, and became the best-selling female artist of all time. She has also tried her hand less successfully at acting (Glitter, Precious), a perfume creator (M by Mariah Carey) and as a Season 12 American Idol judge. But it took her quite some time to get her personal life in order. Her marriage to Mottola ended in 1997 after gossip columns claim she cheated with Yankee Derek Jeter and she spent the next few years rebelling against his overprotective ways in trendy clubs and trashy clothes. On the heels of her breakup with Latin star Luis Miguel in 2001 and a very erratic appearance on MTV’s TRL, she was treated multiple times in mental health facilities. In 2008, she married the much younger Nick Cannon who she had met three years earlier. The couple welcomed twins, daughter Monroe and son Moroccan Scott Cannon, in April 2011.
