2012 is off to a wonderful start for Beyonce and Jay-Z!
The superstar couple welcomed a baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter, on Saturday in New York. "Her birth was emotional, extremely peaceful, we are in heaven," Beyonce and Jay-Z said in a joint statement released on Monday. The duo revealed that their daughter was delivered naturally at a "healthy" 7 pounds, adding, "It was the best experience of both of our lives."
The emotional statement from the notoriously private couple finished with gratitude, thanking everyone for "prayers, well wishes, love and support."
"Welcome to the world Blue," Beyonce and Jay-Z's close friend Gwyneth Paltrow tweeted Sunday. "We love you already."
According to "GMA," the couple chose "Ivy" because of the significance of the number "4" or "IV," -- Beyonce and Jay-Z were born on Sept. 4 and Dec. 4, respectively, were married on April 4, 2008, and Beyonce's latest album is titled "4.")
It's the first child for Beyonce and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z (whose real name is Shawn Carter).
An observer at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital told Us Weekly that Jay-Z was spotted walking the hospital halls Saturday morning looking happy. Some of Beyonce's family members -- sister Solange, parents Tina and Mathew Knowles -- were also spotted at the facility with "flowers with pink balloons and silver and black ribbons," the witness added.
Superstar pal Rihanna also tweeted the good news on Saturday, writing, "Welcome to the world princess Carter! Love Aunty Rih." Fellow hip-hop icon Russell Simmons wrote, "Congrats to my good friends Beyonce and Jay-Z."
The 30-year-old singer first announced she and her hubby, 42, were expecting at MTV's Video Music Awards in August. During her incredible "Love on Top" performance, she exclaimed, "Feel the love that's growing inside of me," before ripping open her purple sequined blazer to reveal her baby bump.
