Angelina Jolie Pays Tribute to Teenage Pakistani Girls' Education Activist
After 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban because of her outspoken activism for girls' right to an education, her cause caught the attention of the world -- and Angelina Jolie. At Thursday's Women in the World summit, Tina Brown announced that Jolie was donating $200,000 to Yousafzai's education fund.
"In a brutal attempt to silence her voice it grew louder, and she [became] more resolute, calling on the entire world, not just Pakistan, to ensure the right for every girl and boy to an education," said Jolie at the conference, according to WENN. "She is powerful, but she is also a sweet, creative, loving little girl who wants to help others, to work for others … her goal is progress, not notoriety … there is a lot we can learn from this little girl." Yousafzai later appeared via video and said the money would help 40 girls in her hometown in Pakistan.
