The on-off nature of Katy Perry and John Mayer's relationship may have inspired her new hit single. "'Roar' is a song I wrote as I was a little bit upset," Perry recently told BBC 1 Radio. "I found myself having a break with my boyfriend, who I loved very much, and it really hurt my heart. I said to myself, 'I need to see what is going on with me and make sure I'm all good.' When you break up with someone it's easy to say they are crazy and think it's all them, but, honestly, maybe there is 50 percent responsibility on your behalf. It was just time for me to be honest with myself."
It's not exactly a romantic tune, either. The lyrics to "Roar" are all about finding inner strength after being "held down" by a partner who strong-armed things in the relationship. "You held me down, but I got up," Perry sings. "Get ready cause I've had enough."
Mayer's new album, "Paradise Valley," includes a duet with Perry on the track "Who You Love," which is about how we can't control who we fall for.
