Stars, just like us, have been using "The Elf on the Shelf" as a Christmas tradition for the past decade.

Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell, self-published "The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition" in 2005. The pair, along with another family member, began selling the book and doll during local holiday festivities near their hometown in Marietta, Georgia. It started to gain national popularity in 2007, after Jennifer Garner was photographed carrying the book.

Since then, more than eight million copies have been sold, and many people utilize the cultural phenomenon as a way to get into the holiday spirit.

In honor of the item's 10th anniversary, see how stars have been extra creative this year with the beloved toy.

Kourtney Kardashian kicked off her holidays with their family toy hanging from a light fixture. "Our friend is back," she captioned this picture.

Melissa Joan Hart is also a fan of the tradition and shares photos of family's elves -- Snowflake, Snowball and Jingle -- getting into trouble around her house.

In one case they were joined by a character from "Frozen," named Olaf.

"Snowflake, Snowball and Jingle are all having too much fun with this snowball fight that took Mama too long to set up! @elfontheshelf #elfontheshelf #Olaf decided to join in too," she captioned this pic.

While "running out of ideas," Melissa, who is a mother to three sons, Mason, Braydon and Tucker, creativity had her toys help display Christmas cards.

"These little monkeys had some fun hanging all our Christmas cards on the window tonight.... @elfontheshelf. #elfontheshelf #5moredays #outofideas," she captioned this photo.

Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram as well to share the adventures she sets up for her kids -- Charlotte and Rocky -- to find.

"They are #back - it's the #elfontheshelf (and the other #elfontheshelf) Loosely translated to #mom stays up late at night thinking of new places to hide them and new #trouble for them to get into. 23 days 14 hours and 23 minutes- but who's counting???" she said in the first photo of the season.

Her elves also played with "Frozen" characters but not in a fun way. "I guess even the #elves are tired of 🎤#letitgo #elfontheshelf," she captioned this photo.
