Wait, what? "Orange Is the New Black" actress Kate Mulgrew had one of the strangest childhoods of all time, one that saw her confined in a cage.

In an interview with U.K.'s ITV, the actress gave some very interesting and even more bizarre facts about growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, including the fact that she was born with a full set of teeth.

"They're actually sort of — they're pearlescent, they're blue," she said. "And they're very dangerous because the baby can swallow them."

For her own safety, her parents had her teeth removed.

Her mouth was hardly the only strange thing about young Kate. She said that she had an inability to feel pain when she was a baby, as well, so her parents had to essentially keep her kenneled.

"They built me a little cage, because I had no sense of pain until I was four years old," she said. "So I was born with teeth and had no sense of pain. Shakespeare would have had a field day. It's a witch! That's what a witch is."

These days, Kate is roaming free around Hollywood and is beloved for her role as Russian prison cook Galina "Red" Reznikov. She, too, loves her role. In fact, she loves all the role in the show.

"I'm in bliss, you only get this a handful of times in a career. At this point in my life, it's absolutely heaven," she said. "When there's an original mind creatively behind (the show) you recognize it instantly. This is why (the show) has surpassed all expectations."

That's not to say she hasn't had acting success before the prison comedy. She's been around the block for years and was even the first female captain in the late-'90s TV series "Star Trek: Voyager."

In an interview with the U.K.'s Telegraph she said, "I was possessed by this conviction that I would be a great movie star or theater actress. I didn't understand that these things are hard-won."
