The piano-playing entertainer went on "The Graham Norton Show" on Feb. 5 and explained that while out at restaurant in 2012 he accidentally ran into Madonna, whom he'd been feuding with, and decided to extend the olive branch to her after years of bad blood between the icons.
John explained on the show, "I said something horrible about her that you should never say. I was in a restaurant in the south of France a couple of years ago and she walked in so I sent her a note saying, 'You'll probably never speak to me again but I am really sorry and ashamed of myself and can I buy you dinner.' She was very gracious and accepted and we talked. We are fine -- it was just me and my big mouth."
The witty performer then joked, "I can't say it won't happen again but not with Madonna!"
For about a decade, the "Candle In The Wind" singer took a great deal of potshots at blonde bombshell. Luckily, John's amends was well received and ended the bitterness between the two which seemed to begin around 2002, when John referred to her song for "Die Another Day" as the "worst Bond tune ever."
While accepting his award for Classic Songwriter at the Q Awards in 2004, the "Tiny Dancer" singer took the opportunity to diss Madge for her nomination for Best Live Act, saying, "Madonna, best live act? F*** off. Since when has lip-syncing been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much. That's me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No."
The insults kept going, even John's husband David Furnish got in some digs about Madonna after she beat out John for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 2012. Later that year, things turned even uglier after Madonna took a swipe at Lady Gaga, who is godmother to one of John's sons, and the icon defended his good pal by attacking Madonna for being a copycat herself.
John went out of his way to hurl insults when he said, "[Madonna is] such a nightmare. Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn't happen to a bigger c***. 'She looks like a f***ing fairground stripper. She's been so horrible to Gaga."
After all those horrible comments, we are amazed that Madonna accepted his apology -- but we guess that's why she's the queen of pop!
