Ricky Martin no longer living la vida loca with longtime boyfriend
It's the end of the line for Ricky Martin and Carlos Gonzalez Abella. The crooner confirms that he has called it quits with his stockbroker boyfriend after five-plus years of low-key togetherness.
"Ricky and Carlos have mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be united by friendship and their shared experiences," his rep said in a statement.
Martin welcomed twin sons in 2008 via a surrogate and came out two years later.
"I have experienced wonderful things with my partner," Ricky told Vanity Fair in 2012. "Complexity, understanding, and, at the same time, freedom, not being afraid that your partner is judging you. That is what I have found with Carlos."
Things could have gone a different way.
"When I started the process with my sons, Carlos wasn't in my life," continued Martin. "He said: 'I'm looking for a boyfriend, not a father with a family.’ And I said to him: 'You've found a grown-up, full-fledged man.' I created a family structure and if he didn't understand he'd ask me questions and we were on our way. He has a really strong personality. He's nobody's puppet."
The singer recently mentioned how he'd love to tie the knot in Spain, where he has been granted citizenship, but he has repeatedly downplayed talk of an engagement.
The breakup reportedly took place before Christmas. On Dec. 27, Ricky tweeted, "Changes oh changes."
