Jason Priestley dishes on Shannen Doherty, Brad Pitt in new memoir
Jason Priestley knows drama. After finding mega-fame on Aaron Spelling's soap "Beverly Hills, 90210," the former teen idol experienced firsthand the perks and pitfalls of Hollywood superstardom. He and his costars -- including Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, and Luke Perry -- spent much of the 1990s in the spotlight, where they had an all-access pass to some of the biggest names in showbiz.
Now, the 44-year-old actor is dishing all about his famous friends in an upcoming book, "Jason Priestley: A Memoir," out May 6. Get an exclusive look at some of the juiciest excerpts in the new issue of Us Weekly, previewed here.
On Shannen Doherty:
Doherty, who played Priestley's sister on "Beverly Hills, 90210," had a reputation for being a bit of a bad girl on set. (The actress herself has admitted to "earning" that rep and making some "shameful" mistakes in her past.)
She's friends with many of her costars (including Priestley) now, but she didn't make the best impression back in 1990, when Fox executives sent the pair via private jet on a last-minute trip to New York City for a meeting with advertisers.
"I could not believe my ears at Shannen's very first words after she boarded," Priestley recalls in his book of their travels. "Her butt had barely hit her seat before she said loudly to the PR person, 'Really? A town car? You send a town car to take me to the airport, not a limo?' She sighed a very put-upon sigh. I laughed, as I couldn't really tell if Shannen was kidding or not."
He continues: "But that was just the beginning. I looked on, becoming more uneasy by the minute as she began bitching about the short notice and the food on board and the temperature in the cabin and everything else."
On Brad Pitt:
Before Brad Pitt was Brad Pitt, three-time Oscar nominee and one-half of the superstar couple Brangelina, he was just another struggling actor looking for his big break. And in 1987, he moved into the apartment Priestley shared with a roommate in L.A.
"Just for fun, we used to have competitions over who could go the longest without showering and shaving," Priestley writes of the 12 Years a Slave producer. "Brad always won. Having to go on an audition meant cleaning up, which is what usually put an end to the streak."
